Chester Racecourse is set for some unique runners on the track this weekend, as a Pantomime Horse Race returns to raise money for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.
Featuring 21 costumed characters, including a unicorn, reindeer and polar bear, the race will be run over the final furlong of Chester’s historic course at Sunday’s Liverpool John Lennon Airport Family Fun Day.
Organised as a vital fundraiser for the hospice, which provides end-of-life care and support to local individuals and families, the race gets underway from 1.30pm and precedes a six-race card.
Backed by local businesses who have signed up to participate, including headline race sponsors Centric Energy Solutions, Barrow Electrical and Pulse Systems, prizes will be handed out to the winning horse, highest fundraising horse and best turned-out horse.
Last year’s event raised more than £12,000 for the hospice and was won by a donkey named BRR IAN, who is back to defend the title.
Alan Knell, Philanthropy & Relationship Manager at the Hospice of the Good Shepherd, said:
“The Hospice of the Good Shepherd are delighted to be partnering with Chester Racecourse for our Pantomime Horse Race once again. This unique fundraising event will help the Hospice raise an incredible amount of vital fundraising income and offer a fun race for the racing world to enjoy.
“Our thanks also go to the many businesses getting involved in the race to support their local hospice.”
Louise Stewart, Chief Executive of Chester Race Company, said:
“Last year’s Pantomime Horse Race was one of the most rewarding to be run on the Roodee, raising thousands of pounds to support the vital care that the hospice provides.
“We’re delighted to see that the business community has really embraced this fun concept and will be trotting out so many representatives to fundraise on the track again this year.”
